Thursday forecast: A grey but warm day with highs hitting 18°C, though rain lingers in the west

Secure the patio furniture. Winds are set to ramp up to a very strong 6 Beaufort tonight.

Newsroom

If you are a skier, snowboarder, or just someone who likes looking at webcams of snow while sipping coffee in a warm office, today is your day.

The low-pressure system parked over the island has been busy. While the dust is still lingering in the atmosphere to keep things hazy, the headline story is the mountains. We have seen a significant jump in snow depth overnight, giving the peaks a proper winter coat.

Today offers a strange mix of "mild but moody." Temperatures are actually rising, hitting a comfortable 18°C inland and 19°C on the coast, warmer than we've felt all week. However, the skies will be partly to mainly cloudy, and if you are in the west, keep the umbrella handy for local showers.

The wind will start off relatively polite (light to moderate), but as the day goes on, it will shift to the south/southwest and pick up speed (4 to 5 Beaufort).

Tonight is when the weather gets wild. We are expecting isolated showers and the potential for a thunderstorm. But the real factor will be the wind. Gusts are set to reach a very strong 6 Beaufort locally, and the sea will be moderate to locally rough. It’s definitely a "stay inside and listen to the wind howl" kind of night.

The outlook

Friday & Saturday: The unsettled pattern locks in. Expect a mix of clouds, local showers, and isolated thunderstorms to kick off the weekend.

Sunday: The drama fades slightly to mainly cloudy skies, though a shower or two might still pop up.

The mercury is creeping up, sitting comfortably above seasonal averages.

Snow update: This is the big news. Yesterday we were at 16cm; today, the snow depth at Chionistra stands proudly at 27 centimeters. That’s a serious top-up!

Stay safe and enjoy the fresh powder views!
