A new way of handling prescriptions within Cyprus’ General Healthcare System (GESY) is set to take effect this Friday, introducing barcode technology aimed at improving privacy for patients.
Under the updated system, individuals collecting medication from pharmacies will no longer need to verbally share personal details. Instead, they will be able to present a barcode that links directly to their prescription. This change is intended to reduce the exposure of sensitive information in public settings.
The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) explained that the barcode will be accessible digitally through the Beneficiary Portal. Patients can display it on a smartphone, tablet, or similar device when visiting a pharmacy.
To locate the code, users must log into the portal and navigate to the “Available Referrals” section, where prescriptions are listed. Pharmacists will scan the barcode to retrieve and process the prescription instantly, eliminating the need for spoken identification details.
For those who prefer not to use the barcode system, the option to present an official ID card at the pharmacy will remain available.
