Reports from Turkish Cypriot media have drawn attention to the severe deterioration of the Greek Cypriot cemetery in the occupied town of Lapithos, where extensive damage has been documented.
According to coverage by the Turkish Cypriot outlet Kibris Postasi, the cemetery shows clear signs of long-term neglect. Numerous graves have reportedly been destroyed, while many tombstones are broken or displaced, leaving parts of the burial ground in ruins. The site is described as abandoned, with widespread structural damage across the burial areas.
The publication accompanied its report with photographs that illustrate the extent of the destruction, showing damaged memorials and collapsed graves. The condition of the cemetery has reportedly caused strong reactions from individuals who visited the location and witnessed its current state firsthand.
The issue has renewed concerns over the preservation and protection of religious and cultural sites in occupied areas, particularly cemeteries, which hold significant historical and emotional importance for displaced communities.
