Hamas calls for 'day of furious rage' following leader's death

Haniyeh’s death sparks protests across Middle East

Palestinian militant group Hamas has called for a "day of furious rage" on Friday, coinciding with the burial of its slain leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar.

In a statement on Thursday, Hamas urged public anger over Haniyeh's killing in Tehran, an attack blamed on Israel, and to protest the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. "Let roaring anger marches start from every mosque" after Friday prayers, the group said.

Haniyeh, who had been living in exile in Qatar along with other Hamas political leaders, will be buried in the Gulf state on Friday following a public funeral held Thursday in the Iranian capital. He and a bodyguard were killed Wednesday in a pre-dawn strike on their accommodation in Tehran, according to Iran's Revolutionary Guards, in an attack that has raised fears of a wider regional conflict.

Hamas called on "the masses of our revolutionary people in the occupied West Bank" to show support for Palestinians in Gaza, affirming their commitment to their land and national rights, and to confront Israeli occupation plans.

In Tehran, crowds of mourners gathered Thursday for funeral events for the Hamas leader, with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei leading prayers. The killing has also prompted protests in Amman, where thousands of Jordanians gathered on Wednesday outside the Israeli embassy. Demonstrations were held in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, as well as in the capitals of Tunisia and Morocco.
