Police in Larnaca are investigating an attempted kidnapping after a 51-year-old man reported being assaulted outside his home on Thursday evening.
According to the complaint, the man noticed a suspicious commercial van parked near his residence while he was inside with a 36-year-old woman and a 72-year-old man. Three individuals were sitting inside the van, which prompted the 51-year-old and the 72-year-old to approach and see what was going on.
As they moved closer, the three occupants, whose faces were hidden behind surgical masks, allegedly attacked them and tried to force the 51-year-old into the vehicle. The two men fought back, causing the assailants to flee on foot and abandon the van at the scene.
Police who arrived shortly afterward inspected the vehicle and discovered that it carried license plates belonging to a different car. Inside, officers recovered a handgun with an empty magazine along with additional items that were taken as evidence.
Both men sustained minor injuries during the incident. The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the case.
