Newsroom

A fire broke out early Thursday morning on an electric bus parked near the Tombs of the Kings area in Paphos, prompting an emergency response and an official investigation into the cause of the blaze.

According to the Fire Service, the driver had just parked the bus when he noticed smoke coming from the vehicle. He immediately called for assistance. Video footage published by Pafos Press shows the bus engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing into the air as bystanders attempted to extinguish the fire using portable fire extinguishers. Two fire trucks arrived shortly after and managed to bring the fire under control soon after 1 a.m.

Initial assessments suggest the fire was caused by an electrical fault. The Electromechanical Service was called to the scene to investigate further.

In response to the incident, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works convened an emergency meeting chaired by Minister Alexis Vafeadis. The meeting was attended by the Ministry’s Director General and representatives from the Departments of Road Transport, Electromechanical Services, and Public Transport.

Following the meeting, the Ministry announced that an expert from abroad, who had previously investigated a similar incident, will once again be called to examine the cause of the fire. The expert is expected to arrive in Paphos on Saturday, 8 November 2025, to inspect all buses of the same type as the one involved in the blaze.

As a precautionary measure, all buses of that model operating in the Paphos district have been grounded until inspections are completed. Sample inspections will also be carried out in other districts afterward.

The bus company has stated that affected passengers will be notified directly and provided with updates regarding service adjustments.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire as safety checks proceed across the electric bus fleet.
