Lightning strikes cause forest fires, swiftly contained

Rapid response by Department of Forests prevents spread in Karvounas.

Two forest fires caused by lightning strikes were brought under control within minutes on Friday morning after a rapid response by the Department of Forests.

According to an official announcement, the first fire broke out at 10:25am in the Karvounas area. Firefighting crews responded immediately and contained the blaze by 10:40am before it spread. The fire was spotted by a passing citizen, who alerted authorities.

A total of 13 forestry personnel, supported by two fire engines, were deployed to extinguish the fire. Officials confirmed that the cause was a lightning strike.

A second fire broke out at 10:50am in the Lachani area of the Evrichou community. The Department of Forests responded quickly and brought the fire under control by 11:00am, preventing any expansion.

Five personnel and one fire engine were involved in tackling the second blaze. This fire was also caused by lightning and was detected by a Department of Forests tractor operator carrying out forestry work in the area.

Authorities stressed the importance of early detection and quick response in preventing wildfires from spreading, especially during periods of unstable weather.
