Public sector unions have issued a strong denunciation following a series of violent incidents targeting firefighters while on duty.
According to a joint statement released on April 8, PASYDY and SYPYK described an attack that took place on Monday, April 6, in the Trachoni area. Firefighters responding to a blaze in the courtyard of a local church were confronted by a group of youths as they were leaving the scene. The individuals reportedly hurled insults and threw stones at the crew.
The unions stressed that this was not an isolated case. They pointed to a similar incident less than a month earlier, on March 8, when firefighters tackling a fire at the church of Agios Nikolaos in Polemidia were again targeted in a stone-throwing attack by young people.
In their statement, the organizations expressed serious concern over what they described as a pattern of aggression against emergency responders. They called on authorities to take immediate and effective measures to ensure the protection of Fire Service personnel, emphasizing the need for conditions that allow firefighters to perform their duties without obstruction or fear.
The Minister of Justice and Public Order has also addressed the issue, stating that investigations into these incidents will be handled rigorously. He indicated that those responsible are expected to face legal consequences, with efforts underway to bring suspects before the courts.
The unions emphasized the demanding and hazardous nature of firefighting, warning that such attacks further heighten the risks faced by personnel. They urged the public to show respect for emergency workers and to reject behaviors that undermine public safety.
Concluding their statement, PASYDY and SYPYK reaffirmed their commitment to defending the rights of their members and advocating for safer and more dignified working conditions within the Fire Service.
