Police uncover molotov cocktails while bonfire and firecracker incidents spread

Intensified patrols lead to seizures of explosives and removal of bonfire materials across districts.

Police across Cyprus stepped up patrols and inspections over the past day and night in an effort to curb the use of firecrackers, prevent the lighting of traditional Easter bonfires (“lambratzies”), and reduce youth-related disturbances.

During these operations, officers were called to multiple locations where fires had already been started. In several instances, they also discovered and removed piles of wood intended for use in bonfires, working alongside local municipal crews.

In the Limassol district, authorities made a more serious discovery: three improvised incendiary devices resembling Molotov cocktails were found in an open area near a church. The items were collected for further investigation. Police and fire service personnel also responded to separate fire incidents in the area, while additional wood stockpiled in rubbish bins was confiscated with the help of municipal workers.

In Nicosia, officers dealt with several cases involving firecrackers and small fires. Firefighters were called in to extinguish flames where necessary. In two separate situations, wood gathered for bonfires was seized and will be handed over to local authorities.

Meanwhile, increased police presence in Famagusta, Larnaca, Paphos, and the Morphou area did not uncover any major incidents, though patrols and preventive checks remained ongoing.

Authorities say these measures will continue nationwide, with a focus on preventing hazardous activities and maintaining public safety. The public is being urged to act responsibly and cooperate with officials during this period.
