Limassol mobile desalination unit begins full operation

New facility boosts daily water supply as Cyprus expands desalination capacity.

A mobile desalination facility at the port of Limassol has now entered full-scale operation, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Agriculture. The ministry emphasized that, alongside this development, efforts are ongoing to secure a long-term solution to the island’s water shortage.

The unit is capable of producing 10,000 cubic meters of water per day. Prior to its official launch, it underwent a testing phase during which technical performance and water quality were carefully evaluated. Following successful results, the system is now functioning normally and contributing to the country’s overall water supply.

This facility is the third new desalination unit to become fully operational. It follows the plant in Moni, which can produce around 15,000 cubic meters daily, and the unit in Kissonerga, with a daily capacity of 12,000 cubic meters, both of which began operating in July 2025.

With these additions, the total number of active desalination plants has risen from five in previous years to eight today. Authorities expect this figure to increase further with the upcoming launch of a new unit in Garyllis. That facility, also designed to produce 10,000 cubic meters per day, is anticipated to come online within the next few weeks after delays linked to regional geopolitical issues.
