Limassol plans new Mesa Geitonia road link in €650,000 project

The works come after past flooding near the Vathkeia River, but it remains unclear whether the new infrastructure will directly address local flood risks.

The six-month project will connect two streets, upgrade pavements and improve stormwater infrastructure in an area affected by traffic congestion and past flooding.

Limassol Municipality has launched a €650,000 tender to build a new road connection in Mesa Geitonia, alongside drainage and road safety improvements in an area that has experienced both traffic congestion and flooding.

The contract, which excludes VAT, covers the connection between Pavlou Liasidi Street and Stavrou Stylianidi Street. The works include a rectangular culvert, road resurfacing, new pavements and kerbs, and improvements to the stormwater drainage network.

The tender was published on October 8, with bids due by noon on November 6.

The successful contractor will have six months to complete the project from the start of construction, followed by a 12-month defects liability period.

Traffic and road safety among residents' priorities

The road connection was included in a programme of planned municipal works presented by Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis at a public meeting with Mesa Geitonia residents on March 23.

Traffic congestion and road safety were among the main issues raised during the meeting, with residents describing problems affecting everyday travel through the area.

According to the minutes of Limassol Municipal Council meetings, the proposed connection had also featured in earlier discussions concerning a planning application for a commercial development in Mesa Geitonia.

The council subsequently approved the project, with funding allocated through the municipal budget.

Drainage works in an area affected by flooding

The project also includes infrastructure to manage rainwater, an important consideration for an area that has experienced flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

In December 2025, Storm Byron brought flooding to parts of Mesa Geitonia after the Vathkeia River overflowed. Roads near the Linear Park were among the areas affected.

Flooding had also been recorded in previous years, prompting work at sections of the riverbed to improve the flow of water.

However, the precise role of the new culvert in addressing these problems has not been clarified. Although the contract includes stormwater infrastructure, it is unclear whether the drainage works are specifically designed to tackle known flooding hotspots or are primarily intended to support the new road connection.

Construction to begin after contract award

Before work can start, the successful bidder must submit a traffic management plan for approval by the relevant authorities. The plan will set out temporary traffic arrangements and safety measures for motorists and pedestrians during construction.

The start date will depend on the completion of the tender evaluation and the award of the contract.
