Liverpool football star Diogo Jota has reportedly died in a car accident in Spain, according to local media outlets. He was 28.
The Portuguese international was allegedly traveling with his brother, Andre, when their car veered off the A52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria, in the province of Zamora. Spanish sports newspaper Marca reported the crash early Wednesday morning.
As of this writing, there has been no official confirmation from Liverpool Football Club or Portuguese authorities.
Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported £41 million, quickly became a fan favorite for his sharp finishing and tireless energy on the pitch. He played primarily as a left winger and had become an integral part of Jürgen Klopp’s attacking lineup.
His reported death comes just days after he married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children. On June 22, the couple posted wedding photos on Instagram, standing at the altar with their kids. “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever,” the caption read. The post drew more than 190,000 likes, including reactions from Liverpool teammate Darwin Núñez and Natalia Becker, wife of goalkeeper Alisson.
Tributes have started pouring in on social media as fans await official confirmation. Jota, known for his humility and work ethic, had earned 52 caps for Portugal and scored 14 international goals.
Further details on the crash and any official statements are expected later in the day.
