Two bikers in Larnaca were hospitalized Sunday night after they collided with a vehicle driven by a man who was arrested on a drunk driving violation.

A 48-year-old Larnaca resident, described as a Greek passport holder, was arrested Sunday night following a road accident on Kiti-Mazotos rural highway.

Police said the man was driving southbound around 10:15pm when under circumstances still pending investigation his car collided with two motorcycles driven by local men, aged 32 and 41. Following a head-on collision, the two bikers were injured and rushed to the Emergency Room at Larnaca General Hospital.

Police said officers administered a Breathalyzer test on the car driver with a final minimum indication showing seven times over the limit

The 41-year-old was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit with multiple fractures in his ribcage, hands, and legs. Reports said he underwent emergency surgery, while the 32-year-old was treated for broken ribs and a head injury.

Additional reports said investigators were looking into a number of scenarios including the possibility that the car entered the opposite lane before colliding with oncoming traffic. It was not immediately clear whether other vehicles were present or involved in the incident.

Police said officers administered a Breathalyzer test on the car driver with a final minimum indication showing 152 milligrams, a blood alcohol content estimated to be seven times over the limit set at 0.22mg.

The driver was detained overnight while there was no information whether he would appear in court for a remand hearing or have charges directly filed against him.
