Man wanted for 760m euros worth of fraud arrested at Larnaca airport

The 49-year-old man was detained pending extradition proceedings in China

On Sunday night, a 49-year-old man who is wanted by Chinese authorities on an international warrant in connection with a fraud case was apprehended at Larnaca airport.

According to a statement from the Police Headquarters' Communication Branch, "the 49-year-old man is allegedly related to a case of fraud and extortion through loans, a sum of money of 5.6 billion yuan CNY China, equivalent to more than 760 million euros."

It went on to say that "the 49-year-old has been wanted by Chinese authorities since July 2020."

"Shortly before 9.30 p.m. on Sunday 13 November, the man appeared in Larnaca airport to depart from Cyprus, but during the check by members of the police, it was established that he was wanted, and he was arrested on a temporary warrant issued by the authorities of the Republic," the statement said.

The 49-year-old man was detained in order to begin judicial extradition proceedings in China.

The investigations are being carried out by the Larnaca CID.
