Fire brigade and Forestry department mobilized to tackle challenging wildfire

A massive fire erupted in the Limassol district on Wednesday (02/08) around noon, prompting the Fire Brigade and the Forestry Department to take immediate action.

Fire Brigade spokesman Andreas Kettis reported that the blaze started in the Ayios Mamas community of Limassol district, and they have dispatched four fire engines to the scene.

The fire is spreading rapidly in challenging terrain, engulfing forests and wild vegetation, presenting significant difficulties for firefighting efforts.

George Constantinou, the spokesperson for the Forestry Department, described the situation as highly complex and revealed that the "IKAROS 2" plan has been activated. A coordination center has been established in the area to coordinate the response.

In response to the escalating situation, the number of aerial firefighting assets has been increased from five to nine.

Authorities are working tirelessly to contain the flames and protect lives and property in the affected area. The situation remains critical, and efforts are underway to control the fire's spread.
