Melanos landmark in Chloraka turned into illegal rubbish dump

Mattresses, old furniture and other discarded items have been dumped beside a stream near the natural site.

A natural area in Chloraka has become the subject of complaints after local environmental advocates reported extensive illegal dumping in the vicinity of Melanos.

The Cultural and Environmental Group of Chloraka says parts of the area, which is regarded as an important natural site, have been littered with discarded household items and other waste. According to the group, residents and visitors regularly report poor conditions in several locations across the community, including rubbish accumulation and a lack of cleanliness.

Particular attention has been drawn to Charilaou Floraki Street, below the Melanos area and near the stream, where large quantities of unwanted materials have reportedly been left behind. Mattresses, old furniture and bulky waste items are among the objects said to have been dumped there, altering the character of the landscape.

The organisation is calling on local authorities to carry out an immediate clean-up of the affected locations and to strengthen enforcement measures against illegal dumping.

It is also urging authorities to identify those responsible and impose substantial penalties. The group argues that strict fines and other sanctions are necessary to discourage similar behaviour and protect the area's natural environment.
