More than 550 kilograms of litter were collected from Agia Eirini beach during a recent coastal cleanup organized by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in cooperation with SPOT Marine Life.
The initiative brought together UNFICYP civilian staff, military personnel and officers from the United Nations Police (UNPOL), who worked alongside one another to remove waste from the shoreline.
According to UNFICYP, the rubbish collected included plastic packaging, discarded fishing equipment and other debris that can harm marine ecosystems and coastal habitats.

The cleanup was carried out as part of efforts to promote environmental protection and encourage community participation in safeguarding Cyprus' coastline. Organizers said reducing marine litter contributes to healthier seas while helping strengthen cooperation among those involved in conservation activities.
The event was also linked to World Oceans Day, which is observed annually on June 8 to raise awareness of the importance of protecting oceans and marine life.
UNFICYP said collective action remains essential in addressing pollution and preserving coastal environments for future generations.
