Ministers allegedly unaware of EU probe into Vasiliko project

Cyprus government faces scrutiny over communication gaps

The European Commission has launched an investigation into the Vasiliko project, sparking a wave of controversy and finger-pointing among Cyprus officials.

Deputy Government Spokesman Yannis Antoniou confirmed the investigation's initiation in March by the European Public Prosecutor's Office during a radio interview on "DIASPORA NEWS." Antoniou emphasized that "those who should have known, knew," addressing reports that the Energy and Justice Ministers were unaware of the probe.

When asked whether the Energy and Justice Ministers were supposed to be informed, Antoniou stated, "I am not aware of those details. I am telling you the government's position; the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus knew about this investigation."

He further explained that the government acted discreetly due to ongoing efforts to recover assets belonging to the Republic from the consortium involved in the Vasiliko project.

The investigation focuses on potential misconduct related to the terminal, with the European Commission scrutinizing the project's execution and financial management. The Energy and Justice Ministries have yet to comment on their alleged lack of awareness regarding the investigation.
