A small earthquake was detected late Saturday morning near Cyprus. The tremor occurred at approximately 11:11 a.m. in the sea area off Paphos.
Data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre places the magnitude at 2.7 on the Richter scale, indicating a light seismic event unlikely to cause damage.
Such low-magnitude earthquakes are relatively common in the Eastern Mediterranean region, which sits along active geological fault lines. Events of this size are often felt only faintly, if at all, and are typically recorded mainly by monitoring instruments rather than reported by residents.
