Welcome to Monday! Whether you are trapped at your desk counting down the hours, already lounging on a beach bed with an iced latte, or playing that dangerous game of "responding to emails from a sun lounger," the island’s weather is firmly in mid-summer mode. That omnipresent seasonal low pressure is running the show today, delivering a textbook mix of intense heat and bright blue skies.
For those of us working inland today, it’s a standard July cooker. Temperatures are forecast to hit a flat 40°C across the central plains, definitely hot enough to make your car's steering wheel a safety hazard, but it's exactly what we expect from a proper Cyprus summer.
If you've managed to sneak away to the coast, you've won the day. The southwest and west coast are the absolute places to be, offering a highly manageable and refreshing 31°C. The rest of the island’s coastline will hover around a steady 34°C. If you’ve gone all out and taken a mountain retreat, the higher peaks of Troodos are sitting pretty at a comfortable 30°C.
Wind and waves: The morning kicks off quietly enough, but the wind is scheduled to wake up after lunch. Expect breezes out of the southwest to northwest at a light to moderate 3 to 4 Beaufort, ramping up to a locally strong 5 Beaufort along windward beaches by the late afternoon. The sea will match that energy, shifting from slight to a little rough, so hold onto your beach umbrellas.
Tonight: Downslope breezes and clear skies
Once the sun sets, the day's drama evaporates. The night will remain beautifully clear across the island, making it the perfect excuse to find a seaside taverna or a rooftop bar to forget it's only Monday.
The wind will shift direction, turning into light, downslope breezes and locally variable puffs at a faint 3 Beaufort. The water will keep a light, rhythmic chop, remaining slight to a little rough into the early hours.
The midweek outlook: More of the same
If you're looking for a change of pace to break up the week, the atmosphere isn't cooperating. Tuesday and Wednesday are a simple carbon copy of today; uninterrupted sunshine from dawn to dusk.
By Thursday, the sky will throw us a minor curveball with some increased cloud cover popping up in localized areas during the afternoon, but it won't bring any relief from the heat. Temperatures aren't expected to budge an inch through Thursday, staying locked in place slightly above our usual seasonal averages. Keep the water ice-cold and the sunscreen close by!
