Cyprus' Deputy Ministry of Shipping is examining an incident involving a Cyprus-registered cargo vessel that came under fire while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the Ministry is in direct contact with the ship's management company and is handling the case through the appropriate channels while continuing to monitor the situation.
The vessel involved, M/V GFS Galaxy, was reportedly fired upon by Iranian forces while sailing about nine nautical miles east of the Musandam Peninsula, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a maritime security organisation operating under the UK's Ministry of Defence.
Mr Letymbiotis confirmed that the crew have been taken safely to a neighbouring country. One crew member, however, remains unaccounted for. He also stressed that no Cypriot citizens were among those serving on board the vessel.
Commenting on conditions in the area, the Government Spokesperson said that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz has become particularly difficult for ships of every nationality following the military activity that took place overnight.
