A fatal traffic accident in Limassol on Thursday night claimed the life of 51-year-old Giorgos Georgiou. The crash occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on the old Limassol-Nicosia road, near the Moni overpass.

According to police, a van driven by a 41-year-old man traveling toward Limassol reportedly veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with Georgiou’s motorcycle. Emergency responders rushed the injured motorcyclist to a private hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life.

Authorities confirmed that the van driver was tested for alcohol, returning a reading of 48mg%, more than double the legal limit of 22mg%. He was subsequently arrested under a court warrant to assist with the ongoing investigation.

The Limassol Traffic Department is examining the exact circumstances that led to the collision.
