Nicosia has been awarded the title of Europe’s Best Cultural Destination for 2026, earning top recognition from the European Best Destinations (EBD) organization, according to an announcement by the Municipality of Nicosia.

Securing first place represents a strong opening to the year for the Cypriot capital and highlights its growing profile on the international cultural stage. Municipal authorities say the award reflects years of consistent efforts to position Nicosia as both a cultural hub and an emerging destination for visitors seeking authentic urban experiences.

The distinction is the result of EBD’s annual selection process, which combines expert assessment with public voting. More than 22,000 travelers from 131 countries took part in evaluating Europe’s leading cultural cities. Nicosia achieved the highest overall score, receiving 18.6 out of 20 and ranking first among all contenders.

EBD organizers noted that the city impressed judges and voters alike through its rare blend of deep historical roots and contemporary artistic expression. Nicosia was praised for the genuine character of its cultural life, its constantly evolving creative scene, and the atmosphere shaped by its Mediterranean identity. Special emphasis was placed on its status as Europe’s last divided capital, a feature that adds to its distinct cultural and historical significance.

Municipal officials stated that the recognition reinforces Nicosia’s role on the European and global cultural map and validates the city’s long-term strategy to develop as an inclusive, sustainable, and forward-looking capital, one that honors its heritage while actively investing in present-day creativity and future growth.

The Municipality also extended thanks to local cultural institutions, artists, organizations, and residents, acknowledging their daily contribution to the city’s cultural character. It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote culture and enhance residents’ quality of life.

Nicosia topped a prestigious list of cultural destinations for 2026, followed by Florence, Vienna, Leuven, Šibenik, Verona, Tomar, Rouen, Oxford, and Graz.
