Oroklini, a growing community near Larnaca, is gearing up for a major transformation, with a series of exciting projects set to enhance the area. The planned developments, which are estimated to cost over €12 million, will include an outdoor amphitheatre, a new sports centre, and the redevelopment of the old neighbourhood.
Deputy Mayor Neophytos Fakontis shared the news with the Cypriot news agency, explaining that these projects are part of the municipality's strategy to create a more vibrant and modern Oroklini. Thanks to a merger with the Larnaca Municipality under the Local Government Reform, the local council has been able to secure support from the mayor, the municipal council, and technical services to move forward with these initiatives. The goal is to bring millions of euros in European funds to the region.
Key Projects for Oroklini:
- Outdoor Amphitheatre: One of the standout projects will be a 1,000-seat outdoor amphitheatre in the heart of Oroklini. This cultural venue aims to host performances and events, giving residents and visitors a place to enjoy the arts.
- New Sports Centre: The plans also include the construction of a sports centre with a multi-purpose hall. This facility will cater to the community's sporting and recreational needs, offering space for various activities and events.
Fakontis emphasized that these projects would be pivotal in giving Oroklini a much-needed upgrade, improving both its social infrastructure and its appeal to visitors and residents alike.
In addition to these developments, Fakontis provided an update on the third phase of the Larnaca-Dhekelia road project. This phase, which started about a year and a half ago, is nearing completion. The road, expected to be finished by March, will stretch from the Oroklini Police Station to just beyond the Lebay Hotel. The upgrade will include four lanes, service roads, roundabouts, bike lanes, sidewalks, and green spaces. The cost of this road project is estimated to exceed €20 million.
Another critical project underway is the construction of breakwaters to protect the Oroklini beach. Fakontis explained that the first phase involved rebuilding three existing breakwaters, followed by the creation of seven more. The seventh and final breakwater is expected to be completed by March, with the total cost of this project reaching €4 million. These breakwaters are designed to shield the beach and help form a new coastline.
The breakwater initiative extends beyond Oroklini, with similar efforts planned for Pervolia, a nearby area facing beach erosion. The cost of building the breakwaters there is expected to be double that of the Oroklini project.
On the tourism front, Fakontis mentioned that the final phase of the Oroklini beach promenade is in the bidding stage. The updated plans have been approved by the Planning Department, and the final consent from property owners is expected soon. This project, estimated to cost €4 million, will further enhance the area’s appeal for tourists and locals.
In an effort to make the area greener, Oroklini has also seen a tree-planting initiative, with around 1,000 trees planted in 2024. The majority of these were planted on the beach, while the rest were spread throughout the town. The Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company provided funding for the project. Looking ahead, the local government plans to plant an additional 2,000 trees in March, focusing on the beach and tourist areas to make the region even more eco-friendly.
These ambitious developments show that Oroklini is on the path to becoming a more modern, sustainable, and attractive destination, benefiting both its residents and visitors.
