Over 3 million water-saving devices to be handed out for free across Cyprus

Around 75,000 households will receive kits designed to cut water use by up to 30%, without changing daily habits.

As Cyprus continues to grapple with water shortages and recurring drought conditions, authorities are launching a nationwide effort to help households save water, one tap and shower at a time.

The Water Development Department announced that it has begun the gradual distribution of free water-saving devices to homes and businesses across the island as part of a broader national campaign to encourage more responsible water use.

The rollout is starting in Paphos before expanding to the rest of Cyprus over the coming months.

In total, around 75,000 free kits will be distributed to households and premises. Each package will contain four faucet aerators and two shower flow reducers, simple devices that can be attached to existing taps and showerheads to reduce water consumption.

Officials say the equipment can cut water use by up to 30% without affecting comfort or noticeably changing the user experience.

In other words, most people are unlikely to notice a difference in their daily routine, except perhaps when the water bill arrives.

The initiative comes at a time when water conservation has become a growing concern for Cyprus. The island has endured years of below-average rainfall, shrinking reservoir levels, and increasing pressure on water supplies, particularly during the hot summer months when demand spikes.

While large-scale projects such as desalination plants and water infrastructure upgrades often dominate the conversation, officials say small changes inside homes can collectively make a significant difference.

The distribution had already begun earlier this year in businesses and commercial premises with high water consumption. The household rollout now marks the next phase of the program.

By the time the campaign is completed, authorities plan to distribute a total of 2 million faucet aerators and 1 million shower flow reducers across the island.

The hope is that thousands of small actions taken by individual households will add up to substantial water savings nationwide.

For many Cypriots, saving water has become second nature after years of hearing about droughts and dwindling reserves. But with climate change expected to make dry periods more frequent and intense, officials say conservation can no longer be viewed as an occasional effort reserved for the summer months.

Instead, they argue, it needs to become part of everyday life.

And if something as simple as changing a shower fitting can help preserve one of Cyprus' most precious resources, authorities say it's a small adjustment that could have a big impact.
