The Mayor of Paphos, Phedon Phedonos, has raised an alarm over the appalling living conditions of a woman in his municipality, sharing shocking photos on social media that reveal the extent of the neglect. The images show the woman living among piles of garbage, old mattresses, and a general state of filth – all while authorities, including the Welfare Office, have been aware of the situation for years.

In a post that has sparked outrage, the Mayor described the dire state in which the woman resides, and voiced his frustration at the inaction of responsible authorities. “If an accident leads to a fire, all the authorities will act as if they are experts and then feign ignorance,” Phedonos wrote. "As the Municipality of Paphos, we’ve asked the relevant authorities to come to the scene. The inept and incapable are the real problem in our society."

The photos shared by the Mayor highlight just how dire the situation has become, with the woman living in squalor despite the Welfare Office’s knowledge of her living conditions. The Mayor’s post calls for immediate action from the authorities, criticizing them for their failure to address the issue earlier and stressing the dangers posed by such neglect.

The Mayor's comments have stirred strong reactions from the public, with many questioning how such a situation was allowed to persist under the noses of government agencies and social services.

The post also serves as a criticism of the larger issues facing the island, with Phedonos pointing out the broader challenges Cyprus faces, such as incompetence and bureaucracy, which have led to a failure to protect the most vulnerable citizens.
