A 49-year-old Swedish man who managed to escape from a Larnaca clinic last December will now become a key witness for the prosecution in the trial of two individuals accused of helping him flee. The man, facing charges of financial crimes amounting to around €90 million, had been under guard at the private clinic when he made a daring escape.
On December 22, while receiving treatment for gastroenteritis and chest pain, the Swedish suspect managed to slip away despite being closely monitored. The next day, however, his brief taste of freedom ended when he was found in an unfinished building in the center of Larnaca.
Authorities quickly arrested two people in connection with his escape. A 54-year-old lawyer and a 44-year-old police officer were both taken into custody on December 31, accused of helping the man escape.
In court today, the prosecution announced that the Swedish man would now testify against the lawyer and the officer. The move came as the charges against the criminal were suspended, making him a witness in the case. The lawyer faces serious charges, including assisting a detainee and money laundering, while the police officer is charged with assisting a detainee, abuse of authority, and actions that suggest corruption.
While both the lawyer and the officer have pleaded not guilty, their roles in this daring escape are now being closely scrutinized. The Swedish man’s testimony will be key in determining the full extent of their involvement.
The sentencing for the 49-year-old criminal, who had been scheduled for today, has been postponed until March 28. This delay allows the investigation to continue, with more twists and turns likely to emerge as the case unfolds.
