A suspicious motorcycle, a late-night police chase, and an unexploded bomb outside a Limassol business put authorities on alert in the early hours of Wednesday.
Police received information at around 2:30 a.m. about a suspicious person riding near a building housing a telecommunications company in Mesa Geitonia.
Officers arriving in the area spotted a large motorcycle without license plates. When the rider apparently realized police were nearby, he accelerated away, prompting a chase through the area.
Officers were unable to stop the motorcycle, and the rider escaped. But what police found when they returned to search the area was far more concerning.
An improvised explosive device had been left outside the building’s entrance. It had not detonated.
The area was immediately cordoned off, and a police bomb disposal expert was called to make the device safe. No injuries or damage were reported.
The discovery raises the possibility that the motorcycle rider may have been connected to the device, although police have not yet established who left it there or why the telecommunications business may have been targeted.
Investigators from Limassol police are examining the scene and searching for evidence that could identify the rider. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is also expected to form an important part of the investigation.
