A prison inmate was pronounced dead after he was found unconscious in his cell Tuesday morning.
Media sources say the man, described as a 28-year-old Romanian national, was found unconscious at 10:30am inside his cell at Central Prisons in Nicosia.
Emergency medics at the facility rushed to the scene and the prisoner was then transported to Nicosia General Hospital.
An official statement issued around noon by Central Prisons said the inmate, who was doing time for theft and burglary, had committed suicide around 9am.
Central Prisons officials also notified the prisoner’s family as well as the police, who ruled out foul play.
According to a prison statement, the man was heartbroken over the recent breakup with his longtime girlfriend, who suddenly stopped returning his calls.
