A Game and Fauna Service patrol officer is being praised for rescuing two people from a burning apartment early Friday in Larnaca.

Chief Fire Officer Nikos Longinos commended the officer, whose identity was not released, for leading an elderly woman and her caregiver to safety before firefighters arrived.

According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the fire broke out at about 5:19 a.m. on the first floor of a residential building. In a post on the social media platform X, Kettis said a passerby noticed smoke and entered the apartment despite heavy smoke conditions.

“He showed great courage and led the elderly resident and her foreign caregiver out onto the balcony, where they remained until firefighters arrived,” Kettis said. “This act was critical to their survival.”

Authorities later confirmed the man was an on-duty Game and Fauna Service patrol officer.

Chief Officer Longinos contacted both the director of the Game and Fauna Service and the officer directly to express his appreciation and congratulations for what he described as a noble act.

“Actions like these, always considering our own safety, bring honor not only to the individual but also to the service they represent,” Kettis said.
