After the record high in new cases on Monday, Tuesday saw a record number of deaths in a single day, as authorities reported five coronavirus fatalities and 419 new cases.
Tuesday’s coronavirus fatalities involved a 76-year-old man with underlying health conditions was receiving treatment at the Nicosia general hospital ICU, an 84-year-old man who was at the Limassol general hospital, a 63-year-old man without underlying health conditions, who was also receiving treatment at the Limassol general hospital, a woman aged 92 who was being treated at the Famagusta general hospital, and a 91-year-old woman who was also receiving treatment at the Famagusta general hospital.
The coronavirus death toll rose to 68, involving 44 men (65%) and 24 women (35%), of an average age of 77.
Cyprus hospitals are currently treating 115 coronavirus patients, of which 21 are in critical condition.
59 patients are in the Famagusta general hospital, four of which are in the ICU. The Nicosia general hospital is also treating 25 patients, 13 of which are in the ICU where 10 are intubated. 26 more coronavirus patients are at the Limassol general hospital, four of which are in the ICU. Five more are at the Makario hospital in Nicosia.
Meanwhile, a total of 10,910 tests were conducted on Tuesday, of which 4,208 were PCR tests and the remaining 6,702 were rapid tests.
419 new cases were detected, among which were 212 confirmations of positive rapid test results. The new cases raised the total to 13,286.
The new cases involved 60 contacts, four arrivals to Cyprus airports, 121 people who took the initiative to get tested, 19 people who got tested at general hospitals, two people tested either as part of special health groups or upon the suggestion of their GP, and one tested as part of the program targeting residents of Kato Pyrgos.
