Residents of Agia Theodora, Agia Theodosia, and surrounding areas gathered in protest Friday morning, blocking a recently opened passage near Kritonos Street. Demonstrators say roadworks on Ippokratous–Tseriou Avenue have effectively trapped their neighborhoods, making access for emergency services nearly impossible.
“We’re being left enclosed,” said Eleni Chrysostomou, a spokesperson for the protesting communities. “Despite sending 12 letters since October 2024, we’ve only received one reply. Authorities continue to ignore our calls for safety and dialogue.”
Chrysostomou said residents publicly invited the Ministers of Interior and Transport, the Public Works and Town Planning Departments, and the Strovolos Municipality to attend. While the mayor of Strovolos, Stavros Stavrinides, Deputy Mayor Stella Sourmeli, several municipal council members, and MPs from the Democratic Alignment, AKEL, and the Ecologists–Citizens’ Cooperation were present, government officials were notably absent.
Protesters criticized the implementation of a decades-old planning scheme, calling it outdated and dangerous. “It’s unacceptable to apply a 30-year-old plan in 2025,” Chrysostomou said. “This puts lives at risk and turns quiet neighborhoods into high-traffic zones.”
Residents are urging authorities to revise the planning and restore proper access to their streets, warning that without action, more neighborhoods may face similar conditions.
