The Sovereign Base Areas Police recorded 80 arrests and carried out more than 700 maritime checks during a series of summer operations targeting busy coastal areas and nearby roads.

Operations Guardian and Sentinel ran from June through August across the western and eastern SBAs, with officers focusing on locations that experience increased visitor numbers and traffic during the summer season.

In the west, Lady’s Mile and Curium attracted more than 700,000 visitors. Police activity in the two areas resulted in 74 arrests and 12 criminal cases.

Road safety enforcement also formed part of the operations, with officers recording 22 cases involving driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Five additional cases involved dangerous driving.

The SBA Police Marine Unit carried out 712 checks of boats and jet skis across the island and issued 35 Fixed Penalty Notices in the Dhekelia area.

In the eastern SBA, Operation Sentinel included 100 seashore protection patrols and 26 maritime safety campaigns. These covered beaches along the Ormidia to Xylophagou coastline, as well as Cessac, Fairwinds and Luma.

Temporary Superintendent Melina Papagregoriou said the summer operations required police work both on land and at sea, with officers responding to incidents, assisting members of the public and taking action when behaviour put others at risk.

She said the results would be used to help with planning for next summer.

Although the seasonal operations have now concluded, routine policing and patrols will continue in both the western and eastern SBAs. Officers will remain on duty to respond to incidents and investigate criminal activity.
