The Cyprus Consumer Association is advising parents and students to be vigilant when shopping for school supplies, as a recent survey reveals a significant variation in prices across the market.
The survey, conducted both online and at 10 physical retail locations, indicates that school supply prices in Cyprus fluctuate widely, with some differences compared to last year's prices. Notably, certain businesses offer discounts for online purchases.
According to the Cyprus Consumer Association, school bag prices range from €3.99 to €209.95, depending on size, design, and brand. Pencil cases are priced between €0.79 and €51.40, while pencils, pens, and markers range from €0.13 to €14.99. Notebooks and spiral notebooks cost between €0.39 and €9.99, and filing folders are priced from €0.30 to €5.95.
School clothing prices also vary significantly. School jerseys range from €3.99 to €29.50, trousers from €6 to €26, and skirts from €11.50 to €25.
Compared to last year, there have been noticeable shifts in prices. The cheapest school bags and pencil cases have decreased by 20% and 47%, respectively, while the most affordable markers, pencils, pens, and filing folders have increased by 30% and 50%. The most expensive school bags and notebooks have decreased by 38% and 21%, while prices for high-end pencil cases, markers, pencils, pens, and filing folders have risen by 14%, 39%, and 49%.
The Association emphasizes that these price variations underscore the importance of careful planning and market research. It advises parents to create a list of necessary items and help children understand the difference between essential supplies and those driven by desire.
Additionally, the Association recommends comparing prices and checking the quality of items before purchasing. Parents are also encouraged to consider the physical suitability of school bags for their children and to be aware of each store's return policy for in-store purchases.
The Association warns against buying school items that resemble or are scented like food for health and safety reasons and reminds consumers that school supplies should be seen as learning tools, not status symbols.
Consumers who encounter issues such as misleading offers, discrepancies between shelf and checkout prices, or products that compromise health and safety are urged to contact the Cyprus Consumer Association at 22516112 or via email at info@katanalotis.org.cy.
