A 75-year-old woman from Scotland has died after being struck by a vehicle in a hotel parking area in Paphos on Friday afternoon.
Police identified the victim as Margery Balfour, who was visiting Cyprus from Scotland.
Authorities said the incident occurred at around 1:50 p.m. as a 56-year-old driver was attempting to leave the parking area of a hotel in Paphos. Investigators say the driver stopped after noticing the woman crossing in front of the vehicle, allowing her to pass.
According to the preliminary findings, the woman then lost her footing and fell onto the asphalt. Police believe the driver did not realize she had fallen and proceeded to move the vehicle forward while exiting the parking area. One of the vehicle’s wheels reportedly struck the woman in the back as she remained on the ground.
Emergency responders transported her by ambulance to Paphos General Hospital, where doctors performed surgery. She later died during the operation.
The 56-year-old driver was arrested under a court warrant and remains in custody while investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation is being handled by the Paphos traffic police.
