Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o is pushing back against online criticism over her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, saying she has no interest in getting drawn into social media debates over the role.

In a recent interview with Elle, Nyong’o said she fully supports director Christopher Nolan’s vision for the mythological epic and is focused on the work itself rather than the controversy surrounding it. The debate began after the casting was announced, with some social media users questioning the decision to cast a Black actress in the role of a figure from ancient Greek mythology, sparking wider discussion online about representation and reinterpretation of classic stories.

Nyong’o will reportedly play Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic, which appears to take a fresh approach to well-known mythological characters. Addressing the criticism, she said the film’s casting reflects today’s global reality and that she does not plan to engage with online backlash.

“This is a mythological story. I support Christopher Nolan’s vision,” she told Elle, adding that she prefers to focus on the creative process rather than public criticism that will exist regardless of her response.

She also said she is more interested in exploring Helen as a fully developed character rather than a symbol of beauty alone, explaining that she wants to understand the emotions and psychology behind one of mythology’s most famous figures. “You can’t interpret beauty as a single idea,” she said, noting that she is drawn to the deeper human side of the role.

Nyong’o described working on the film as a major career moment and said she feels honored to be part of Nolan’s project.

The online debate escalated after comments from political commentator Matt Walsh were shared on social media platform X, with billionaire Elon Musk reposting the criticism. Other cast members, including Travis Scott and Elliot Page, have also reportedly faced online harassment linked to the film.
