New video captures one of Cyprus’ rarest and most beloved animals taking its very first steps in the wild.

Deep in the rugged mountains of Cyprus, where the forests are still wild and untouched, a tiny new life has just entered the world.

A newborn mouflon, or "agrino" as Cypriots know it, has been spotted taking its first shaky steps beside its mother in a touching scene shared for World Biodiversity Day on May 22.

The agrino, Cyprus’ iconic wild sheep and one of the island’s most treasured endemic animals, is more than just wildlife roaming the mountains. For many Cypriots, it represents resilience, freedom, and the island’s fragile connection with nature.

Every spring, hidden away in quiet and rocky parts of the forest, female mouflons give birth after around five months of pregnancy. Usually, they bring just one baby into the world.

And from the very first moments, survival begins.

The newborn must quickly learn to stand on its own legs, even while still weak and unsteady. Guided by instinct, it stays close to its mother, who cleans and protects it while helping it feed on its first milk, crucial for survival in the wild.

The heartwarming footage is a reminder that despite growing development, climate pressures, and human activity, Cyprus’ wildlife continues to endure.

The Cyprus mouflon is considered rare and protected, living mainly in the forests of the Troodos and Paphos regions. Spotting one in the wild is often seen as a special moment even for experienced hikers and nature lovers.

And every new birth offers something else too: hope.

Because in a world increasingly dominated by concrete, screens, and city life, moments like these remind people that nature is still quietly carrying on around us, one tiny step at a time.
