A senior citizen from Mazotos was killed in a road accident in Larnaca following a collision involving an illegal right turn.

According to Cyprus News Agency (CNA), 73-year-old Demos Thoupos was a passenger in a car driven by a 72-year-old man from Kiti, Larnaca district, on Wednesday morning.

Around 9:10am, the vehicle was on traveling on Tersefanou avenue in Kiti when the driver attempted to make a right turn into the parking lot of a concrete mix company.

Larnaca police said preliminary findings showed that the victim was not wearing his seat belt

As the vehicle was turning, it blocked the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming car driven by a 24-year-old man with a 16-year-old male passenger.

Thoupos was wounded seriously in the collision and was rushed to the Emergency Room at Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.

The two young men were treated by medics while the 72-year-old driver was admitted to hospital for further medical treatment. CNA later reported that he was out of danger.

Larnaca police said that preliminary findings suggested that Thoupos was not wearing his seat belt, while Breathalyzer tests administered to both drivers showed zero alcohol consumption. Drug tests also came back negative, according to police.

There was no information regarding speed as a possible factor. Larnaca traffic police are investigating the incident.
