Spehar to brief UN Security Council on renewal of UNFICYP

Deliberations to determine the future of UNFICYP

Newsroom / CNA

UNSG`s Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, is expected to brief today the members of the UN Security Council during closed consultations, on the UNSG`s report on the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and on the developments of the Cyprus issue.

The open meeting of the UN Security Council for the renewal of the UNFICYP`s mandate will take place on the 30th of January.

The consulations regarding the content of the resolution were initially at P3 level (USA, UK and France), are now being held on the level of the P5.

After today`s consultations, the draft resolution, prepared by the UK, may be given to the UNSC members.

Yesterday, the UNSG`s UNFICYP revised report was circulated. The new text is identical with the one given unofficially to the UNSC members on the 11th of January, meaning it abolishes all changes that were done on the text that was circulated officially.

More specifically, the four references on Jane Holl Lute, which were removed from paragraph 3 of the report are being restored, as well as the term "alive" for the prospects instead of "positive", and the reference on "foreseeable horizon" instead of "foreseeable future" as regards the prospects for the resumption of meaningful negations "leading to a settlement within a foreseeable horizon".

In paragraph 8 of the report the sentence "Cooperation by either side with the mission in relation to the preservation of calm and stability in and around the buffer zone and the facilitation of intercommunal contacts was uneven" is brought back.
