A large fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon in the Polemidia area has been brought under control, though officials say full extinguishing will take some time due to the nature of the materials that caught fire.
According to the Fire Department, the blaze burned through around two hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation, and large piles of waste. While the flames have been contained, the smoldering heaps of rubbish are proving tricky to put out completely.
Four fire engines, along with a Forestry Department unit, responded to the scene. Two firefighting aircraft also assisted in dousing the flames from the air.
Investigators will begin looking into the cause of the fire once the area is fully extinguished and safe to enter.
No injuries have been reported, but photos from the scene show thick smoke and charred debris, painting a stark picture of just how quickly a fire can spread when rubbish and dry vegetation are left unchecked.
