As Cyprus wakes to the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ, a day when many Orthodox faithful take grapes to church to be blessed, the island is set to bask under a sky that mirrors the occasion’s brilliance. Tradition has it that the first grapes of the season, brought to church today, symbolize transformation and abundance. Whether you’re among those heading to the local chapel with a basket of sweet sultanas, or simply enjoying the fruits of summer in your garden, brace yourself: the weather is also having its own “transfiguration.”
Today will start mostly clear, with a few fluffy clouds loitering around the western and northern coasts, probably trying to escape the heat. Winds will swing in from the southwest and northwest, beginning as a gentle 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale, before flexing their muscles to a robust 4 to 5, and in some southwestern spots even hitting a brisk 5 to 6. Seas, too, will put on a bit of a show: slightly rough overall, but choppier along the southwest by afternoon.
Temperatures are on the up. Expect a sizzling 38°C inland, a warm 32°C along the southwest and west coasts, 35°C on the rest of the coast, and a slightly more forgiving 31°C up in the mountains. Tonight, the skies will stay mostly clear, with some low clouds creeping in, especially up north and west. A light mist may pay a visit during the small hours, adding a hint of mystery to the pre-dawn hours. Nighttime temperatures will dip to 24°C inland and on the coast, and a refreshing 19°C in the highlands.
Looking ahead, Thursday remains sunny with the occasional cloud cameo. Friday stays bright but gets warmer. By Saturday, the mercury takes a leap, soaring well above the seasonal average, so consider it nature’s way of reminding you to top up the sunscreen and keep the frappé close.
So whether you’re tasting those newly blessed grapes, lounging by the sea, or retreating to the cooler peaks, today’s weather offers a blend of heat, tradition, and a touch of the dramatic, much like Cyprus itself.
