Water supply restored in Limassol after wildfires, officials say

Repairs continue as crews replace burned pipes and damaged meters.

The water supply network in Limassol is gradually returning to normal following the devastating wildfires in the region’s mountainous areas, officials said Monday.

Giannis Tsoulokftas, president of the Limassol Water Supply Board, and Dimitris Andronikou, district engineer for the Water Development Department, told the Cyprus News Agency that any issues arising in the network are expected and are being addressed.

Water service to affected communities was restored Friday, they said. However, heavy use for cleaning operations in lower-altitude villages has slowed efforts to supply water to some streets and individual homes. Pressure fluctuations in the pipelines have also caused damage in parts of the network.

Tsoulokftas said the board has sent generators to communities that rely on boreholes and have not yet been reconnected to the power grid. The generators are helping restore local networks. The board also dispatched hoses and pipes to replace surface lines that burned during the fire.

In addition, crews have identified damage caused by pressure fluctuations and have replaced hundreds of fire-damaged water meters from the board’s reserves, he said.

Andronikou said consumption was especially high in low-altitude homes during the first days of restoration, delaying water delivery to some households. “Water was added to the central reservoirs on Friday, but demand slowed its distribution to consumers,” he said.

He added that the damage and delays were expected. “We have staff from the Water Development Department working alongside personnel from the Limassol Water Supply Board, making continuous efforts to restore the system,” Andronikou said.
