Recent rainfall has led to the gradual overflow of some smaller dams, offering a rare but limited sign of relief. Videos shared by members of the public on social media show water spilling over at the Kafizides and Saitas dams, footage that has induced cautious optimism among residents.
Despite these localized overflows, the broader picture remains concerning. According to data from the Water Development Department, none of the island’s major dams has overflowed to date. Water reserves remain extremely low, with total stored volumes across all dams standing at 31.277 million cubic metres, just 10.8% of overall capacity.
Authorities note that current reservoir levels are significantly worse than those recorded during the same period last year, underlining the ongoing severity of water scarcity.
