Heavy snow and icy conditions have thrown travel plans into disarray at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, where at least 450 flights were canceled on Monday, according to Dutch media reports.
Airport authorities said the cancellations were necessary to keep passengers and crews safe, as winter weather made takeoffs and landings increasingly difficult. Schiphol is one of Europe’s busiest airports, meaning even short disruptions can quickly snowball into widespread delays.
The problems began days earlier. Since Friday, hundreds of flights have already been called off as snow and freezing temperatures continued to hit the Dutch capital.
And the situation may not be over yet. Officials warned that more cancellations could follow as the day unfolds, depending on how weather conditions develop.
For travelers, the advice is simple: check your flight before heading to the airport. With runways needing constant clearing and aircraft requiring de-icing, Schiphol is bracing for another difficult day as winter tightens its grip on northern Europe.
