€100K bail, closed-door hearing, and serious charges shake the city as pressure builds ahead of court showdown.

It’s the kind of headline that stops a city in its tracks.

The suspended mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phaedonos, is officially heading to trial, facing serious criminal charges tied to an alleged incident dating back more than a decade.

In a closed-door process early Tuesday morning, the Paphos District Court completed the procedure to refer the case to trial, setting May 28 as the date that could mark a turning point for both the accused and the city watching closely.

Phaedonos, who is currently suspended from his mayoral duties, walked into court alongside his wife. He later walked out on bail of €100,000, free until the trial begins.

But the charges he now faces are anything but light.

According to the indictment, there are four counts against him: rape, indecent assault, wandering while intoxicated with intent to commit an offense, and assault causing actual bodily harm. The case stems from a complaint alleging rape in 2014, 12 years ago, raising immediate questions across Paphos about timing, accountability, and what happens next.

Behind closed doors...for now

Tuesday’s proceedings were held out of public view, following a request by the legal service. The defense did not object but made it clear: this isn’t the end of the secrecy.

At a later stage, they are expected to push for open hearings, meaning what’s now unfolding quietly could soon become very public.

A case that moved cities, and momentum

The legal path to this moment has already been complicated.

The case was re-registered in Paphos, where the alleged incident is said to have taken place. Prior proceedings in Limassol were paused to allow that process to happen properly.

Now, everything resets in Paphos, placing the spotlight firmly back on the city and one of its most high-profile political figures.

Why this hits differently in Paphos

This isn’t just another court case.

Phaedon Phaedonos has long been a polarizing figure, admired by some for his tough stance on local issues and criticized by others for his confrontational style. That alone would make this trial headline news.

But the nature of the charges, and the fact they date back 12 years, adds another layer. For many in Paphos, it raises uncomfortable questions: Why now? What changed? And how will this reshape trust in local leadership?

For now, the mayor remains out on bail. The courtroom doors are closed. And the city is left waiting.

May 28 is when the story truly begins.
