Rescue operation turns deadly for one swimmer in Cyprus’ Cape Greco area

A swimmer is dead and another one injured following a rescue operation Thursday afternoon, after Larnaca rescuers got an SOS call in the Cape Greco area.

First responders from the Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) received an emergency call around 1:45pm and rushed to Konnos Bay where they found two swimmers, who were picked up by the coast guard.

It was not immediately clear whether the swimmer died before or after rescuers actually got to him

Coast Guard officers were able to collect the two men at 2:02pm, according to local reports, but one of them passed away before getting medical treatment.

The other swimmer was taken to the Famagusta General Hospital for medical treatment.
