A 17-year-old student being treated for meningitis at Nicosia General Hospital has died. The teenager had been in intensive care and passed away early Wednesday morning.
This is the third recent case of bacterial meningitis reported in Cyprus. In the past few days, a high school student in Limassol and an infant from Paphos were also diagnosed, raising concern among health officials.
Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection that affects the protective lining of the brain and spinal cord. While it's not very common, it can affect people of all ages — including teens and young children. Quick treatment with antibiotics is crucial.
Doctors say the illness can sometimes be spread through close contact, like coughing, sneezing, or sharing utensils, but it’s not as contagious as the common cold or flu. Officials are urging the public not to panic but to stay alert for symptoms such as high fever, headache, neck stiffness, nausea, or sensitivity to light, especially in children and teens.
