A Larnaca-based attorney has filed a complaint over what he described as the “unlawful arrest and inhumane treatment” of a minor by members of the Larnaca Police Department.
Attorney Paris Loizou said his office was contacted on the night of April 8 by a man identified as K.K., requesting legal representation for his underage son. According to Loizou, the boy was arrested near his home without explanation given to his parents.
“When I arrived, I found a heavy police presence and the minor handcuffed, with no clear justification,” Loizou said. “When I asked the supervising officer why my client had been arrested, I received no response. This occurred in front of the boy’s parents.”
Loizou alleged that several police officers committed unlawful acts during the incident, while others stood by without intervening. He said video evidence recorded at the scene supports these claims and will be submitted as part of the complaint.
“The behavior of this small group of officers, led by a specific supervising officer, who is fully identifiable, falls far outside the bounds of legality and what is expected in a modern state governed by the rule of law,” he said.
Loizou emphasized that the actions of the officers involved should not reflect on the entire Larnaca Police Department, which he said generally operates professionally under the leadership of Commander Zachariou.
“These inhumane images speak for themselves,” Loizou said, adding that once the minor’s identity is protected, he intends to release the footage publicly to help safeguard other minors who may be at risk.
He concluded by calling on high-level officials to take responsibility.
“There is no longer any excuse, not from the Chief of Police, not from the Minister of Justice, and especially not from the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides,” Loizou said. “As a parent himself, I urge him to act immediately and within the framework of the law.”
