A 17-year-old student is in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Nicosia General Hospital after being diagnosed with meningitis.
According to Dimitris Konstantinou, Press Officer of the Ministry of Health, this is the third case identified recently, with the student's condition described as "serious."
He added that the Ministry of Health is conducting contact tracing and administering preventive treatment to those who may have been exposed.
Furthermore, Konstantinou stated that the Ministry is "closely monitoring the situation" and remains "on alert."
Last week, two additional cases of bacterial meningitis were reported—one involving a high school student in Limassol and another an infant from Paphos.
In a statement issued last week, the Medical and Public Health Services explained that meningococcus is transmitted through close contact via respiratory droplets.
The highest risk is for individuals living in the same household as the patient (especially children), those in the same classroom daily, or adults working long hours in shared, enclosed spaces (such as offices).
The bacteria, however, is not spread through brief or casual contact.
It is important to note that in 2024, four cases of meningococcal disease were reported, while three have been confirmed so far in 2025. These cases are unrelated and do not indicate an outbreak.
