Foxes have been spotted in central Nicosia, raising both interest and concern among residents. According to biodiversity officer Charis Nikolaou from the Ministry of Agriculture, the presence of these adaptable animals in urban areas is not unusual.
Foxes thrive in cities due to their omnivorous diet, which allows them to scavenge from garbage. Their appearance is also linked to a rise in rodents, as foxes are natural predators of rats and mice. Improper waste disposal further attracts them, along with other wildlife such as corvids, reptiles, and birds of prey.
While foxes do not pose a danger to humans, Nikolaou warned that consuming low-quality food from trash could negatively affect their health. He emphasized the importance of proper waste management to support a balanced coexistence between humans and wildlife.
